AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT BÚHARI ON THE INVASION OF FUROPA COMMUINTY BY THE MILITARY
His Excellency,
Muhammadu Buhari, (GCFR),
The President,
Federal Republic of Nigeria,
The Three Arms Zone,
Abuja.
Sir,
AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI TO INVESTIGATE, PROSECUTE THE INVASION OF THE MILITARY ON FROPA COMMUNITY AND THE SETTING UP OF EMERGENCY SETTLEMENTS AND FOOD.
It is with a broken heart and tears in my eyes that I am bringing this gruesome and unholy military action taken by the Nigerian Army on our people in Fropa community in Southern Ijaw Local Government(LGA) of Bayelsa State destroying homes with thousands of families fleeing the community.
Mr. President, on what account should the Nigerian Army invade a community that she should be protecting like a full fledge war no matter the gravity? This action by the Military is uncalled for, not necessary and it’s against the rules of engagement. No matter the gravity of the offense committed or the militants in the area, dialogue as we all know is the best form of conflict resolution. The duty of the Nigerian Army is to protect lives and defend the Nigerian territories which Fropa community is also part of rather than to destroy.
Sir, let’s bear in mind the peculiar relationship of our communities with the International Oil Companies(IOCs). Our communities play host to these IOCs and we suffer heavy impact of the oil exploration activities by these IOCs. Oil spillage in our rivers and lands has taken away the source of livelihood and our people are yet to benefit from the natural resources bestowed by God to the people.
Mr. President, it will be so sad at this critical time when the world is under siege by this corona virus disease and the federal and state governments have directed a stay at home to curb further spread of the virus that such Military action is taken place. Suffice it to say that hunger has creeped into these communities with women and children already starving. Our youths are becoming desperate and angry that they’ve been left to suffer without palliatives to cushion this effect of the stay at home directive. Therefore, a military action of this magnitude at this time is colossal to the people of this community.
Mr. President, we therefore condemn this action of the Nigerian Army in its entirety. This is brutality, insolence, negligence and the breach of security of lives and property. The people will not take it likely. We call on you Sir, for the proper investigation of this action and to bring to book those who perpetrated this wicked action on our people.
Sir, we also plead with you that emergency settlements be set up immediately for these people and food items and other medical palliatives should be sent to cushion the effect of this action and the stay at home directives due the covid-19 pandemic. Sir, failure to do so may lead to an uprising in this community and it may be catastrophic to lives and property and also to energy facilities in this community.
Sir, we look up to you because we know you have the welfare of the people at heart. We know you are a man of peace and with a compassionate heart. May the Almighty God and Allah bless you mightily and bless us all.
Thank you
Signed:
